We visited a bird-sanctuary late last year and had a wedge-tailed eagle fly low over our heads. It was picking up some meat that had been left for it on a branch.
On one such swoop, a kookaburra raced in and beat the eagle to the treat. I would have thought that a dangerous enterprise, but the kookaburra apparently got away with it.
I later heard that an Ibis had previously tried a similar trick, but was seriously pummelled by a less-than-happy alpha predator.
